FAQ
Quick answers
PDO (Polydioxanone) threads are dissolvable, medical-grade sutures used in minimally invasive, non-surgical cosmetic procedures to lift, tighten, and contour sagging skin, primarily on the face, neck, and body. They work by providing an immediate, subtle lift while stimulating natural collagen production, with results lasting 6–18 months.
The strongest PDO (polydioxanone) threads for lifting are generally molded cog/barbed threads, specifically thick-gauge options designed for substantial tissue repositioning in the lower face, jawline, and neck. These offer maximum tensile strength and, when combined with anchored, bi-directional barbs, provide the most significant, durable lift.
A thread lift typically lasts between 9 months to 18 months, with most patients enjoying optimal results for about 12 months. While the dissolvable sutures (PDO) break down within 2–4 months, the collagen stimulation they induce keeps the skin lifted, firm, and rejuvenated for over 1 year.
Individuals with mild to moderate laxity see better, longer-lasting results compared to those with severe sagging
.
PDO thread infections in the face are relatively uncommon but represent a significant potential risk, with reported rates generally low (around 2%–6% in some studies). While most cases are managed non-surgically, severe cases may require thread removal. Key risks include infections, skin dimpling, and thread extrusion.
Smooth threads (often called PDO mono threads or collagen threads) are thin, dissolvable polydioxanone threads inserted under the skin to stimulate natural collagen production, improving skin texture, firmness, and elasticity. Unlike lifting threads, they are smooth (non-barbed) and focus on skin rejuvenation rather than lifting tissue.
